08 Aug Top Tips For Staying Cool This Summer
Things are most definitely heating up, well the weather at least…
In the UK we often find ourselves concentrating on how we can keep the heat in, over the last few years we are trying to find solutions to keep the heat out!
When summer arrives, myself and my neighbours absolutely love sitting in our gardens drinking tea/wine. The one thing we all dread is our up stairs, the heat. The heat is unbearable! Our houses are south facing and have flat asphalt roofs, which absorbs the heat all day and then pumps it onto our our upstairs, all night. In the peak of the heat wave no one in our family could sleep up stairs as temperature at night hit 39 degrees.
Trying to regulate body temperature is incredibly important for health of our bodies and it’s day to day functionality. With another week ahead of sleepless hot nights, I have been busy researching and trialing out different ways to help ease the effects of heat (especially at night) for ourselves and our kids.
Here are my Top Tips For Staying Cool This Summer
Ice blocks
Ice blocks are a great way of cooling down quickly. You can buy ice blocks from any household shop, just pop them in the freezer every morning. Wrap the ice block in a thin pillow case and then apply to wrists & chest for immediate cool down. They last longer than ice cubes, with no mess.
Iced peppermint tea
Fresh or dried, infused peppermint or spearmint is made by infusing peppermint leaves in hot water. Leave to rest and then add ice and enjoy. Peppermint leaves contain several essential oils that are released when steeped in hot water, including menthol, menthone and limonene. Collectively, these give peppermint tea its refreshing, cooling, minty taste.
DIY ‘Air Conditioner’
Fill a shallow pan or bowl with water and freeze. Place this in front of a fan. As the ice melts, the fan will pick up the cold water particles and blow them around the room creating a cool mist.
Freeze pillows covers and sheets
Getting yourself off to sleep can be difficult on a hot and muggy night. Try popping your cotton sheets and pillow cases in the freezer an hour before bed. This well help lower your core temperature, aiding you to drop off successfully.
Homemade essential oil cooling spray.
Looking for a natural way to cool down quickly, an essential oil cooling spray might be just what you need. I use a selection of essential oils to help cool myself including: lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint being the most beneficial (and great insect repellents).
