Top 7 Natural skin care moisturisers for autumn & winter

In this autumnal time of the year, we very often see a difference in our skin as well as the weather outside. A combination of the drop in temperature, central heating, wind and rain can make our skin susceptible to dryness and damage.

I place my annual order of oils with my supplier Bay House Aromatics to get my stock up of essential and carrier oils ready for the colder months.

I use carrier & essential oils every day for so many different reasons on family, my clients and myself as a part of a skin routine and to dilute essential oils. In this blog, I am highlighting oils that are amazing for your skin for the up and coming cold months.

There are thousands of products in the market that promise to protect your skin but I’m never sure what preservatives or parabens they use to prolong the shelf life so I make my own as much as possible from scratch, it’s easy and much cheaper!

Carrier oils – What are they, where do they come from, what do they do?

Carrier oils are derived from (mainly) nuts and seeds of different plants.
They can be used as part of your daily, weekly or monthly skin care routine
Used to dilute essential oils as most cannot be directly applied to the skin.

There are MANY different carrier oils you can buy. Here are my tried and tested favourites for you.

Coconut oil
This oil is easily absorbed into the skin moisturising deeply and leaving no greasy residue. Great for removing make up! 
Most coconut oils are solidified so you can choose to use another carrier oil to create more of a liquid substance. Suitable for all skin types, especially acne prone and for lips as a balm.

Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is a very effective moisturiser for the skin and great for all skin types.
It has been reported that this wonderful oil helps relieve dry skin and It’s also useful for treating acne, psoriasis, skin irritations, wind burnt skin and chapped lips.

Avocado oil
This is a dense oil that works deeply to moisturise dry skin, packed with omega 3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, ideal for the winter months. This a great oil to combine with other carrier oils as the aroma can be very strong so less is definitely more.

Argan oil
Moroccan women have been using this oil for skin care for centuries. In fact,  It is derived from the fruit kernel from the Argon tree. The Moroccan goats climb high into argan trees to eat fruit and leaves. The goats then poop out indigestible seeds which are collected, processed and turned into cosmetics. Argan oil is a good carrier oil for combination and greasier skin tones. Great for home based acne treatments. This helps to combat the excess oil production.

Rosehip oil
Rosehip oil is rich in the essential fatty acids and omega-6. Because of it is high free-radical fighting antioxidants, rosehip oil can be used to aid the skin aging process. A few drop of this massaged into your skin before bed on cleansed skin is a great night beauty time ritual.

Grapeseed oil
We use grapeseed oil as our preferred oil for body massage. Recently I have been using it for our beauty facial treatments and have loved the results. Grapeseed is a universal oil and is a lighter oil than most. I use this oil to rebalance oily skin, it never leaves an oily residue and great for giving yourself an at home facial massage after cleansing to help oxygenate your skin.

Wheat-germ oil
Wheat-germ oil is an effective moisturiser for your skin for the colder months. Wheat-germ oil contains a healthy infusion of vitamin A, vitamin D, B vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids. In particular this oil is effective for chapped and dry skin a rich source of vitamin E, which helps reduce skin damage, fight free radicals to help maintain an even skin tone.

All these oils can be purchased on line or at your local health shop. Buying organic products is always best so you know that there are no hidden pesticides or chemicals used in the growth of the plants.

Remember a little goes a long way. You only need to use a few drops so the oil does not saturate your skin.
